Understanding Ketamine Therapy:

A Guide for Mental Health Providers

As a therapist, you know that healing is rarely linear—and that some clients need more support than talk therapy or medication alone can offer. At Golden Afternoon, we provide physician-led ketamine treatment designed to complement and enhance the work you’re already doing with your clients.

“Ketamine is not a replacement for therapy. It’s a tool that opens the door for therapy to go deeper.”

Why Ketamine?

Originally developed as a surgical anesthetic, ketamine is now one of the most promising tools in psychiatry for clients with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD and trauma-related disorders
  • OCD
  • Bi-polar depression
  • Substance abuse disorder (incl. alcohol use disorder, cocaine use disorder, polysubstance abuse disorder, etc.)
  • Chronic pain (including migraines, fibromyalgia, CRPS, etc.)

Unlike conventional antidepressants, which take weeks to work, ketamine can begin relieving symptoms within hours. More importantly, it can spark profound shifts in perspective—giving your clients the momentum they need to engage more fully in therapy and daily life.

How it works

Ketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants. Instead of targeting serotonin or dopamine, ketamine acts on the glutamate system—specifically the NMDA receptor. This leads to a cascade of effects, including:

  • Rapid neuroplasticity – it temporarily blocks NMDA receptors, which increases synaptic plasticity—your brain’s ability to rewire and heal.
  • Ketamine works on the glutamate system, not serotonin. This means it operates differently than SSRIs or mood stabilizers.
  • Dampened threat response – ketamine's dissociative effects can allow clients to revisit difficult emotions with less fear
  • A “reset” of rigid thought patterns – making room for insight, openness, and change

This neurobiological reset is often what helps clients finally experience relief after years of struggle.

Evidence Highlights

Our Approach to Care

We believe ketamine works best when integrated with strong therapeutic support. That’s why our care model is designed to partner with you.

What therapists can expect:

  • Collaborative intake – We’re happy to consult before referral and throughout the series, and always perform our own thorough screening.
  • Shared care – We encourage clients to continue therapy throughout their treatment. With client consent, we can share progress updates.
  • Intentional dosing – We offer IV, IM, and intranasal protocols tailored to each client’s needs and goals.
  • Integration support – Dr. Jenn personally helps clients process their experiences and return to therapy with clarity, openness, and insight.

Whether you're new to ketamine or have referred before, our goal is to make the process smooth, respectful, and grounded in evidence.

How It Helps in Therapy

Many of our referring therapists have noticed:

  • Increased emotional openness
  • Faster progress on longstanding issues
  • Reduction in avoidance and fear-based thinking
  • Greater resilience and self-compassion
  • Increased energy
  • Renewed hope and excitement about life
  • More optimistic and intentional about approaching therapy

Clients often describe the experience as "a weight lifted"—giving them space to reframe, reset, and reconnect with their inner resources.

Is My Client a Good Candidate?

Clients may benefit from ketamine if they:

  • Have tried traditional treatments without lasting relief
  • Struggle with patterns of emotional numbing, despair, or stuckness
  • Experience chronic physical or emotional pain
  • Are motivated to engage in therapy but feel blocked

We do not treat clients with active psychosis, active or untreated mania, or unmanaged substance use, but we’re happy to consult if you're unsure.
